So diefinately the highlight of today was, tonight during trick or treating. Let me preface this by saying halloween is a realitively new phemnomena here (being that it is an american holiday and really ony celebrated on a large level in the U.K. and USA) So the houses that are actually available and open for trick or treaters are few.Tonight at around 5 once all the kids had eaten dinner i prepared that touch and feel halloween game, where you put different food items in a cup such as spagetti or peeled grapes and then pass them around the circle of kids instructing them to only touch while saying this is a cup of Goblin eyes, or troll brains! MUAHAHAHAHA! And then the kids scream in horror and promptly ask to be the first one to touch the next horrible item. I prepared these scary thing for my kids and all the french kids in our neighbor hood who've never played such a frightening game befrore: }:)
-one lumpy oval cherry tomatoe slightly peeled = a troll's toe
-3 blueberries and one peeled scallop, floating in a cup of water= goblin eyes
-2tbs flour mixed with 2 drops green food dye(2 raisins thrown in to make it more realistic)= troll snot
-one dried apricot= a monster's ear
-cachews cut in half and yellow raisins-old and rotten vampire teeth
-spaggetti-frankenstein's brain
-cold chicken nugget- the icy heart of a mean witch
It was pretty hilarious watching all the kids faces as these thigs were passed around. The thing that worked thebest was the dreid fruit posing as an ear- that was the first to go around and really feels like it. The kids ages 10-4 were all freaking out. We sat in my back yard and did the game as it was dark , and they wouldnt be able to see the stuff. After we passed it all around I let them guess what all the food items were. No one was able to figure out the ear or the snot, and though theyve begged me to tell them , i keep insisting that the snot really is what it is.....
The best part of the evening came when all the kids and some parents took the kids trick or treatng down some final streets at around 7:45 near our house. Becuase it was later( the kids had started at 7:15 on our street) the first two houses we went to didnt have any candy left. The first house though was wise and brought out the chocolate ceral bars for the 10 or so kids present. The lady at the house over was not so wise however and pronounced she was all out for the night, and the kids would have to try else where. The 13 year old in the group, whom i love, promptly shouted out "un maldiction sur vous!" meaning loosely a curse upon your house! It was super funny. I was dying. The lady returned with 6 francs and told the 13 year old to split it among the childern to buy candy.
I love trick or treating.
